Malaysia
Our Malaysian breakfast was nasi lemak. Fragrant rice cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaves was served on a banana leaf with tender chicken rendang, spicy chili-and-onion sambal, crisp fried anchovies called ikan bilis, peanuts and a boiled egg. This Malay dish is enjoyed by mixing the different elements together.
Other Malaysian snacks, desserts and drinks included curry puffs filled with spicy potatoes, sago gula Melaka, a sago dessert, and teh tarik milk tea, a perfect match for nasi lemak.
Malaysia lies close to the equator, spanning the Malay Peninsula and part of Borneo near the center of Southeast Asia. Malays, Chinese, Indians and Indigenous peoples live together in this multicultural country. Their different food traditions and religious practices create a wonderfully varied culinary landscape.
